MENTAL HEALTH IN THE MIDST OF A CRISIS

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE MIDST OF A CRISIS

Amid this current global crisis, many of us are challenged with our mental health. I want to be clear that mental health is a real issue worldwide. If you have been diagnosed with a mental condition, please know that there is support out there for you. Let us not be quick to judge others and become descriptive in how we approach or address those who suffer from mental health issues. It’s OK to not be perfect. It’s OK to get the much-needed help. It’s OK to stand in your truth.

How can we maintain our mental health during a crisis? This is a question asked by many. First of all, let us turn to our #1 source which is God. I have found that there is so much peace when we give God our undivided attention. Spending time in prayer allows us to communicate with God. He hears from us and we hear from Him.

What other way can you maintain your mental health in times of chaos?

1. Read uplifting books.

Reading takes our mind off of the current issues and gives our minds a chance to see beyond the chaos. Read hard copy books or e-books to help alleviate the stress.

2. Turn off the news

The media will cause our anxiety level to increase. If you pay close attention you will realize that you receive more bad news than good. If you must watch the news, limit the time you spend watching and or listening to the news.

3. Eating healthy

A lot of our foods provide us with antioxidants, energy boosters that can help us to function much better as we go through this process. Maintain a healthy diet (I know it's hard) lol. Try to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet. If you're not a breakfast person, try making a smoothie each morning. Spend time in the kitchen challenging yourself to try new recipes. Choose foods that will build your immune system. Hydrate your body as well. Show off your culinary skills. Children can make this a fun experience by baking cookies, cupcakes etc.

4. Rest your body and your mind.

We must ensure that we rest when we are supposed to. There’s no way we can fully function or make decisions when our body is tired. Give your body the chance to rejuvenate.

5. Exercise

While under quarantine, or staying at home as some may call it, home workouts are perfect. Use the space in the bedroom, living room or even the park to workout and keep the body going.

6. Hobbies

Hobbies are great for mental health. Gardening, art and crafts, writing, listening to your favorite genre of music, dancing, video chat with friends and family, learning a new language or playing board games. Most of us have access to the internet, let's take advantage of the worldwide web. Take this time to create family time. Good fun for children.

7. Don’t forget to take your prescribed medication

This is something we cannot turn a blind eye to. Whatever your condition may be, it is important to take your medication according to the doctor’s directions.

DO NOT SELF MEDICATE!!!!

8. Reach out to someone if you need assistance

There are crisis line if and when you feel the need to speak to someone. Truth is we may feel like we’re on an emotional roller coaster. Our emotions are running wild. We cannot allow chaos to get the best of us. Grab the phone and call someone. (I will attach the hotline and crisis lines below)

Beloved, try your best to be your best each day. The chaos won’t last always. Remember to stay prayed up and seek God first at all times. Take heed to the necessary precautions.

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33 (NLT)
